Martial arts is a great way to connect with your mind and body through physical exertion and training. It has been found to be a great way for veterans to heal and overcome some of the challenges that are a part of civilian life after serving in active duty. A major part of martial arts training is the belt ranking system. This is far more than simply different colored belts behind the belt ranking system. Foxhole Veterans Charity Foundation is here to talk about what each belt means and how the ranking system works.
The Origin of the Belt Ranking System in Martial Arts
The colored belt system most likely came from Japan in the late 1800s. In the beginning, there were only two colors that were part of they ranking system, white and black. Over the years, there have been several colors that have been added to this important part of martial arts. While the ranking system may work slightly differently depending on the type of martial arts you’re training in, the colors still have meaning behind them.
What the Belt Colors Mean in Martial Arts
There is deep meaning behind each of the different belt colors in martial arts. Here is a breakdown of what each of the belt colors mean:
– White: Every person training in martial arts starts out with a white belt. This symbolizes a blank slate or a beginning. The color white strongly symbolizes purity and new beginnings.
– Yellow: Traditionally, the next color is the yellow belt. Yellow is a symbol of the rising sun or the beginning of a new day. It is also an optimistic color in the belt ranking system.
– Orange: When students show that there is growth in their skills, they will be moved up to an orange belt; often symbolizing the setting sun or maturing in the art. It can also be a symbol of finding one’s true self and gaining confidence in your training.
– Green: Along the path of training in martial arts, green is often a ranking achievement for those that have an intermediate level of proficiency. This color is given to those that are showing dedication and commitment. It symbolizes growth, knowledge and sprouting.
– Blue: As students get nearer to expertise, they are awarded a blue belt. Blue is often compared to the sky. It can be a symbol of enlightenment or insight into the art. This higher level of understanding and insight into martial arts is a big step.
– Brown: The brown belt is given to those that have reached high levels of skill and expertise. This is a symbol of seeds and harvesting the fruits of your labors.
– Black: The highest level of the belt ranking system, black is given to those that are considered masters of the art. There are also three degrees within the black belt ranking to further your growth.
