One of the hardest parts of coming home for military veterans is the loneliness that they often feel. It almost feels as if you have lost a community that you grew so close to during your service. Social relationships are vital for anyone, but especially for veterans. There are studies that show how important social relationships are as they can help improve nearly every facet of your life. Foxhole Veterans Charity Foundation is here to talk about some tips to help veterans build stronger bonds and social relationships.
How Veterans Can Build Strong Bonds & Social Relationships
There are several ways for veterans to make strong bonds with those around them in every aspect of their lives. Here are some tips to make it happen:
– Keep in Touch: When you serve with a group of people, you grow incredibly close to each other. No one has seen the same things that you have other than the people that you have served with. This makes it important to stay in touch with them. Keep those relationships alive.
– Make Plans: As difficult as it may be, make connections with those in your neighborhood, at work and with friends that you already have. This could be something as small as asking a friend to meet up for coffee. Putting yourself out there is proven to pay off. These can help you develop strong social connections.
– Start a New Hobby: Nothing is quite as fulfilling as learning something new. New hobbies can be a great way to get out of your shell and make connections. If you can find a hobby that you do with other people, that’s going to be a bonus. Whether it’s a gardening club, golfing, learning more about art and culture or some other hobby, you can find it incredibly fulfilling to try something new.
– Move Your Body: One of the best ways to get to know people and keep your mental health in check is with physical fitness. One form of physical fitness that can be both a new hobby as well as a way to get some physical fitness, is martial arts. It is a great way to gather with a community of people that are there to live a healthier life, get to know each other, and support each other.
– Go to School: It might be beneficial to go back to school if you are interested in learning and training in something new. Look at your local college mor university for classes that might be interesting to you.
